Introduction to Radio Frequency and Microwave Technology (RF – 101)

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, attendees will possess a comprehensive st of skills and knowledge in microwave engineering as well as understand and apply fundamental principles of microwaves interpret and analyze network parameters and S-parameters for device characterization, unilize the Smith Chart for impedance matching and transformation, and confidently engage in discussions and ask questions regarding microwave engineering principles.

Day 1

Session 1: Inroduction to Microwaves and Network Parameters

  • Overview and applications of microwave components and circuits
  • Relations between EM Theory and Network Theory
  • Introduction to network parameters: impedance, admittance, and scattering parameters
  • Transmission line theory and wave quantities a, b
  • Introduction so S-parameters: reflection and transmission coefficients

Session 2: Hands on session on Microwave Measurement Techniques

  • Vector network analyzer basics
  • Calibration
  • One port and two port S-parameters measurements (simple passive components part 1)
  • Do and don’ts in VNA operation
  • Q&A and wrap-up
Day 2

Session 3: S-parameters and Measurement Techniques

  • Microstrip lines and passive components
  • Active components, diodes and transistors
  • Introduction to the Smith Chart: construction and interpretation
  • Design of matching networks

Session 4: Hands on session on Microwave Measurement Techniques

  • Vector network analyzer basics
  • One port and two port S-parameter measurements (simple passive components part 2)
  • Q&A and wrap-up
