Road accident is one of major problems in Thailand and the South East Asia. The factors mutually contribute to road accidents road user behaviour, road infrastructures and vehicles on the road. Thailand as a UN member also agreed to announce 2011-2020 as the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety in line with the Moscow Declaration. The South East Asia New Car Assessment Program (ASEAN NCAP) as an organization that promotes safer cars for ASEAN region strongly supported Thailand to arrange activities which gear towards zero fatalities. The Sirindhorn International Thai-German Graduate School of Engineering (TGGS) - a representative from Thailand in ASEAN NCAP technical committee, realized this issue and together with ASEAN NCAP hosted the ASEAN Automobile Safety Forum in Bangkok to promote road safety awareness to the publics.

This two-day event, on 1st and 2nd December 2014, started with the parallel technical sessions on the first day that was divided into four ASEAN NCAP technical dialogues (based on the working groups), together with the media coaching conducted in Thai language by Dr. Saiprasit Koetniyom to cultivate better understanding on ASEAN NCAP safety rating initiative. The first day event also included a joint special press conference on child safety by TGGS, ASEAN NCAP and CSIP (Child Safety Promotion and Injury Prevention Research Center) to increase awareness of parents in using the child restraint system and child car seat. Using the child car seat with correct installation has been proved to reduce children fatalities by 71% for infants, 54 % for toddlers.

The second day event received overwhelming interest from 200 participants including representative from government organizations, universities, non-profit organizations, OEMs, the automotive suppliers and public consumers. There were several interesting presentations from many organizations and automotive companies including TGGS, Thailand Accident Research Center, Naresuan University, CSIP, Institute Teknologi Bundung (ITB), Honda R&D, Denso International, Proton, Thatcham, Japan Automotive Research Institute (JARI), ADVICS, Global, Latin, Japan and ASEAN NCAPs. In this forum, the ASEAN NCAP result handbooks in Thai language, translated and edited by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Saiprasit Koetniyom and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Julaluk Carmai from Automotive Safety and Assessment Engineering (ASAE) program at TGGS, were distributed to the Thai road users and consumers also. This aimed to make publics realize the importance of safer cars which can create unanimous force to ensure that safe cars in Thailand are sold at affordable prices.
